The Volunteers

The old saying “It’s better to give than receive” surely applies to our Meals on Wheels Volunteers as the feeling of satisfaction from helping others needing care with our service is truly fulfilling and life enriching. Bringing sustenance to the elderly and infirm is only part of the picture as your visit to our clients is often the only human contact they may have on any given day. They are not only happy to receive their food but a visit from our Volunteer is a sign someone cares enough to give of themselves to serve others in our community.

Our Volunteers are a marvelous giving group, some of whom have been with Meals on Wheels Tewantin/Noosa for over twenty years enjoying not only their contribution to our service but the camaraderie of same-minded caring people who often become friends socially through meeting at our Kitchen on their rostered day, be it weekly, fortnightly, monthly or whatever suits their lifestyle.

We care for them too, always having the urn hot for their beverage or water chilled by our cooler for when they arrive (around 7.30 am for Kitchen staff and 11 am for Drivers) with morning tea of sandwiches, cake and biscuits. They are covered by Insurance for themselves and their car along with Workplace Health and Safety requirements. We also supply Petrol Vouchers for each of the Driver’s runs. We put on a fun Volunteer’s Christmas Party in gratitude each year with a free Raffle of fine prizes including vouchers to Noosa’s leading Restaurants.

If you wish to be a Driver, we have seven runs in the local area covering from Marcus Creek to Cooriabah to Tinbeerwah. Our weekly rosters are published in the “Noosa Today” newspaper.
For further information, please contact our Kitchen (Ph. 5449 7659) to make an appointment to discuss being a Volunteer with our staff led by our dedicated Manager, Desiree.

Volunteers are Healthier

Giving back to the community is good for your heart, according to Canadian research. The study shows even at a young age, volunteers have better cardiovascular health that could prevent heart disease. Improvements across several heart health indicators were recorded within 10 weeks of people joining volunteer programs. The volunteers who reported the greatest increases in empathy, altruistic behaviour and mental health were the ones who also saw the greatest improvments in their cardiovascular health.

SERVICES STILL LEAVE MEALS IN ESKIES ON DOORSTEPS • FACT - Yes can you believe this! For nearly 15 years now QMOW have been providing advice to services against delivering meals to an esky on a doorstep.

This practice is dangerous and not in the spirit of Meals on Wheels. I am sure you have heard the CEO nagging constantly about the risk to the meal by vermin attacks etc along with the potential food safety risks that are present by having" no follow up process to ensure the client has in fact collected the meal that day from the esky.

Apart from the food safety risk Meals on Wheels prides itself of being "more than just a meal" so' if you are delivering to an esky you are not fulfilling that very important and unique side of our service that ensures the client is safe and healthy every visit.

Of course we know that the clients do like to go out from time to time but there are safe ways to deliver a meal. I.e. deliver two the previous day, leave it with an approved and authorised neighbour etc.

It is not acceptable to be delivering meals to an esky because you cannot guarantee the meal remains at the required temperature so therefore void your food safety plan and put your client at risk.

There are options you can offer your client if they wish to go out on delivery day. Many services will deliver an extra meal the day prior.

To All our Volunteers

A.G.M on Tuesday 19th September 1.30pm at the kitchen
